Introduction

Lahore is Pakistan’s second-largest urban area. It is the provincial capital of Punjab, a huge province with a population of almost 10 million. There are 8 million motorized journeys to work, shopping, and other non-walking activities each day to meet the transportation need. Lahore’s traffic congestion has continuously deteriorated over the past fifteen years as the city’s population has grown rapidly and the number of vehicles has increased. In the absence of any anticipated transportation infrastructure enhancements, the situation will deteriorate.

Lahore’s ever-increasing traffic congestion and expected passenger demand necessitated the construction of public transportation systems. There are several benefits to having a network of mass transit systems, such as balancing the demand and supply of metropolitan traffic. In 2007, the Punjabi government’s Transport Department recruited a consultant to design a long-term mass transit network and undertake a feasibility study for a mass transit system in Lahore..

The strategic long-term LRMTS network was developed based on the identification of potential mass transit routes and a detailed examination of patronage and engineering restrictions in those corridors. Then, based mostly on anticipated passenger demand, these lines were ranked in order of importance. The Long Term Network is made up of four lines, which are ranked in order of importance:

  • Ferozepur Road, Mall Road, Ravi Road, and Shahdara are all on the Green Line (MRT) (Commissioned as BRT for Operation on February 10, 2013)
  • Orange Line MRT: Raiwind Road/ Multan Road/ Mcleod Road/ Railway Station/ GT Road (Metro Rapid Transit)
  • Township, Gulberg Boulevard, and Jail Road are all on the Blue Line (MRT).
  • Bhatti Gate/Allama Iqbal Road/Airport Purple Line (MRT)

The Pakistani government also suffered a significant financial loss as a result of this programme. There are no assets in the hands of the government in this Pakistani citizen-run endeavour. It is our moral and national duty to keep this enterprise going rather than focusing too much on the politics of it.
