It depends on the layout of your keyboard. In the English language, I only have to enter the umlaut ̈ found in shift+’ on the right-hand side of the letter ñ and then the i. And yeah, I realize, without a Spanish keyboard, that doesn’t mean anything for someone. My point: if you use umlauts in every language, you can write umlauts easily using keyboards made with that language in mind. The problem will be resolved differently by each of the keyboard layouts.
